DUDE! ABEG SPARE ME THE FAKE ACCENT

accent

There’s this inexplicable excitement I woke up with this morning. I know this current state of being isn’t only for the fact that I feel blessed to see today; I’m also in high spirits because my books have started bringing something in *dancing*

Oh well, let’s get to the real gist. It’s really cool to meet new friends and one of the things a blogger enjoys is the little popularity or admiration we get from people. A couple of weeks back, I got a Facebook message from a particular young man, he said he liked my articles and blab la bla…..I was impressed when he said he followed the articles every week and that he reads from Pretoria, South Africa although he is a Nigerian. When he asked for my number, I simply asked him to check the contact page on the website and he did.

Not up to two minutes after, he gave me a call. When I saw the foreign number, I picked it instantly before it even rang. I was getting ready to speak my best English to this foreign reader…LOL. Imagine my disappointment when I started hearing a very in-genuine foreign accent from the other end of the line. You know that kind of accent laced with a lot of “Yorubalism” and “Gbagaunism” in it. Oh lawd!! To say I was pissed is an understatement. I’m not insulting him oh but he was being really unfair to me as well☹. Haba!! If he had spoken in plain language without the “foney” or better still our beloveth Yoruba, I think I would have appreciated it and understood him more. The “foney” wasn’t just working for me at all. It was too fake to be true!

The other thing that really got me pissed is the way he shouted “your friend from Pretoria” whenever he called. Like seriously?? I know that already. But my friend felt it was paramount to remind me he resides in Pretoria every 5 minutes. Then again, he always called at the odd times and before long, the fake accent and the incessant “gbagauns’ made me lose interest in speaking with my Pretoria friend. The bros just tire me sha! I couldn’t control the brusqueness in my tone whenever he called. It’s his fault tho coz I’m a very nice person. But how can I be nice when I can hardly decipher anything all through a 30 minutes phone call? I was just nodding my head like an Agama Lizard…Lol

I don’t know if it’s just me oh but I bet some people would agree with me that the fake accent thing is very annoying. Some of these people believe that, once they mention that they are outside the country, you’ll fall at their feet. Some feel their fake accent will endear you to them.

ALSO READ LET’S ALL BE FORMING

Nna ehn! That thing doesn’t work for some of us oh! Why not just talk in your real tone or accent? When you now become very good friends with the person, it becomes hard to switch back to your original self.

Well, I know some people have stayed abroad for quite a while and overtime they have acquired these accents but what is the point of having an accent when the grammar and syntax is a total apology? Please let the English be correct first before you add that Benin Republic accent to it….LOL

So that’s how my friend’s accent destroyed our friendship ohh. hmmnn

Please share with me your experiences with all these accent forming people.I really wanna hear your stories too. Tell us if you have a genuine accent: British, American, Australian etc . Well I guess mine is Malaysian….LOL. If I hear

Have a mind blowing week☺

Keep your head up coz no matter what, your life can only get BETTER!

Love,

lol…i can imagine all you went through because i also went through a similar experience as yours. this was even a person i had known since primary school. we also attended the same university. he went for masters in uk immediately while i went for nysc. one day at shoprite i saw the young man and he started to blow grammar for me oh! it wasnt funny, barely two years in uk and your tongue is already twisting…may God help us oh…he tried so hard to impress me by referring consistently on the fact that he just gt back from uk. i put him in a tight corner when i started to converse in yoruba, i knew his weakness and he fell for it,,,before he knew it, his accent disappeared and reappeared whenever became conscious of his speech. you see, tolu, the problem with Africans generally is inferiority complex and so we see other countries as a big deal and want to copy everythn including their language and manner of speech. we have never for once sat down to ask if they would also admire our language and want to speak like us, or do they still see us as ugly, hungry, primitive barbarians?
