What to pack for an outdoor picnic with kids
Last weekend, my friend and I packed all our collective 5 kids plus 2 extras and headed out for a picnic. Omg!! A day out with six boys and one baby girl wasn’t the easiest talking about tantrums and meltdowns but we pulled it off…thankfully.
The picnic was organized by Mabelle Arts in Toronto, Ontario. It was an African Arts inspired event featuring lots of amazing performances and side attractions. The venue was the very spacious greenery Bodacres park with a kids play ground on site. It was so relaxing to just seat under beautiful trees and watch lots of interesting art displays. When going out for a picnic in the summer especially with kids, it’s always best to prepare ahead so as to avoid uncomfortable situations coz you really never know what could happen while they are busy playing around.
Before we headed out, I made sure to apply sunscreen on the kids to protect their skin. I use the Banana Boat sunscreen, it’s literally my favourite sunscreen because it’s got SPF 50 and it doesn’t leave that whitish residue on your skin when applied.
I took out my large brown tote bag and threw in some essentials to ensure a smooth day out with my babies.
Here’s a list of things I packed for our picnic day:
- Diaper and wipes
- Tissue
- SunHats for the kids
- Glasses with clip on sunglasses for me
- Cold Bottles of water
- Cups
- Cookies
- Chocolate drink
- Candy
- Rice rusks snack for baby
- Fruit purée for baby
- Umbrella Stroller (light and easy to fold/carry)
- Large flannel
- Little toys
Fruit and snacks were provided in disposable plates and cups by the picnic organizers. Thanks to Mabelle Arts for inviting us.
I made sure the kids were in light clothes for ease of movement but at the same time covered up enough to be protected from the heat of the sun. It was a 31 degrees sunny Saturday so the heat was quite intense.
Taking along some candy was a great idea coz Jason had a really dramatic meltdown when it was time to leave. Toddler tantrums sometimes get out of control, omg! I can’t even begin to describe what I went through that evening. I got home feeling super exhausted.
